Backed Up Plumbing

The homeowner’s distressing plumbing issues included a toilet backing up into the tub, leaks, and clogged fixtures. This situation is commonly referred to as a main sewer drain blockage, where the sewer line is obstructed, causing wastewater to back up into the home. It’s a problem that can disrupt daily life and lead to potential water damage and health hazards. The homeowner rightly sought professional help to resolve this crisis.

A Recurring Problem

The customer, in this case, is the homeowner, residing in a house that is between 50 to 60 years old. The homeowner noted that similar issues had occurred in the past, although it had been a long time since the last occurrence. The age of the house and the recurring nature of the problem indicated that addressing the issue comprehensively was necessary to prevent future blockages and preserve the integrity of the plumbing system.

Taking Action

A combination of factors caused the main sewer drain blockage. A 3-inch cast iron pipe connected to a 3-inch Orangeburg pipe served as the sewer lateral. The Orangeburg pipe had a protruding rock at the bottom, contributing to the drain backup. Furthermore, the 3-inch cast iron pipe beneath the concrete slab had a bottom breakage, exacerbating the issue.

To tackle this intricate problem, we proposed a comprehensive solution. We initiated extensive home protection measures, including installing zip walls, floor protection, and air scrubbers to establish a safe and clean work environment. Our team then jackhammered through the bathroom, hallway, bedroom, and patio areas, meticulously removing and disposing of all concrete.

We cut and replaced the sewer main in the house with new PVC piping, connecting all existing branch lines. The new pipe was pitched according to code to ensure efficient drainage. The job adhered to regulatory standards, requiring permits and inspections. Lime was evenly spread in the trench to eliminate odors and bacteria, while stone was used for backfilling. We tamped the ground as we progressed with backfilling and poured cement in the trench to complete the job.
