5 Signs You Need a Water Heater Replacement in Pennsylvania

5 Signs You Need a Water Heater Replacement in Pennsylvania

  • Water Heaters
water heater replacement in Pennsylvania by McHale's

No appliance will work forever, and that applies to your water heater, as well. One day, you’ll find out that you need a water heater replacement for your Pennsylvania home. The big question is whether you decide to get a new water heater before or after it fails and floods your basement. Knowing when you should swap out your water can be the difference between a small cash investment versus a major investment to also fix up some water damage. McHale’s can help you learn when it’s time to retire your water heater.

Here are five signs that should have you looking for a water heater replacement for your Pennsylvania home:

Rusty and/or muddy water

Rust in your water is a sign of internal corrosion in either your plumbing pipes or your water heater. If the pipes or internal tank corrosion isn’t the problem, check for rust on the tank seams, the water supply line, the drain valve, and the temperature and pressure release valves. Meanwhile, muddy water is a sign that sediment is building up in your tank. You can clear it out by flushing the tank. However, be careful if you’re flushing your tank for the first time after years of neglect. The sediment may create and plug up holes in the tank, and flushing it out may open up these holes. Holes like these are clear-cut signs a replacement is necessary.

Tank leaks

Standing water and a leaking water tank are sure signs you need to get a new water heater. Sadly, there’s no easy fix for cracks and leaks. We suggest calling us as soon as you can and talk about getting a new water heater.

Old age

A simple indicator of your water heater’s health is how long it has been in use. Tank water heaters can last around ten to fifteen years if properly cared for, so start looking at replacements when yours gets to ten years old. If you don’t know when yours was installed, you can find out by checking the serial number. The exact method depends on what manufacturer made your water heater, so check online at their website to learn how old yours is.

Strange noises

Major appliances like your water heater always make a bit of noise when working. However, pops, cracks and other loud noises are signs of sediment that needs to be cleaned out. When sediment builds up in the tank and eventually solidifies at the bottom of the tank, air pockets in the sediment make noise by boiling along with the water. You can clean out the sediment with flushing, but if the noise continues, you should call us for a replacement, as your tank may be close to an internal failure. Also, don’t forget about the warning about sediment we mentioned under ‘Rusty and/or muddy water.’

Too little hot water

Sediment can do more than damage your tank. It can also block off the heating element from the water, preventing it from heating your water. This forces the heating element to work harder to heat your tank, costing you more money and wearing out your heating element. Eventually, this can eat away at the inside of the tank and cause a leak. Annual tank flushing can keep this issue at bay. Also, getting a water softener can help prevent the minerals that damage your tank.

How To Extend The Life Of Your AC In Bucks County

How To Extend The Life Of Your AC In Bucks County

  • Air Conditioning
ac repair

Just like any other part of your home, you want to be sure that your AC works properly and continues to do so for as long as possible. There are several things you can do to lengthen the lifespan of your air conditioner. With a little work on your end and routine maintenance from a professional, your AC will be able to keep your home cool and comfortable for years to come.

Routine Inspection and Maintenance

To extend the life of your AC to the fullest, maintenance is key. No matter what type of system or model you have working in your home, you should have a professional inspection at least twice a year. This allows for an in depth look at the inner workings of your air conditioner. Here’s what you can expect during a professional tune-up:

  • Performance test of the whole system
  • Visual review of components to look for areas of concern
  • Test to determine the state of the refrigerant charge
  • Overall system control testing
  • Leak test
  • If a service professional suspects a leak, a dye detection test may be necessary

Keep in mind that professional maintenance can lower your energy bills and improve the function and durability of your cooling system. To prevent costly repairs down the road, don’t hesitate to call at the first sign of an issue.

What You Can Do on Your Own

While you should always call a professional if a problem pops up, there are things you can do on your own in between visits to keep things running smoothly. To help extend the life of your AC on your own, try the following:

  • Turn it off when you don’t need it. Your AC could use a break every once in a while! If you are going to be out of the house for an extended amount of time, there’s no need to keep it running. It’s also a good idea to turn the thermostat up a little at night when the temperature outside drops.
  • Keep it clean. Dust or debris buildup can damage your AC, even if its just on the outside. Units located outdoors, even partially, are more susceptible, so its important to keep it free of dust, dirt and leaves. If they are left to build up, a malfunction is more likely.
  • Allow air circulation. Without a proper airflow, sufficient cooling will be difficult. Keep vents free from obstructions.
  • Keep your ducts clean. Unless you have a ductless system, you need to keep your ducts clean. Dust, dirt, mold, or mildew buildup can make its way into your air supply.
  • Keep an eye out for leaks. Whether its your AC itself or your ducts, you should always keep an eye out for leaks. Leaky ducts or hoses will result in your AC needing more electricity to function and cost you more on your utility bills.

In order to extend the lifespan of your AC and keep it running smoothly, call McHales and schedule your inspection today.

5 Reasons to Order a Heat Pump Installation

5 Reasons to Order a Heat Pump Installation

  • Air Conditioning
  • Heating
heat pump in Pennsylvania by McHale's

Most of the time, if you’re looking for a system that can both heat and cool your home, you’ll be getting an HVAC system. However, if you’re looking for something different, you might want to consider a heat pump. Heat pumps are a cost-effective alternative to the classic HVAC system. Instead of radiating heat or cold air, heat pumps move warm air into or out of your home to keep if comfortable. At McHale’s, we can help you with a heat pump installation and tell you why you might want to order one for your home.

Here are five reasons a heat pump installation might be right for you:

Long lifespans

Every type of heating and cooling system has different lifespans. These lifespans are highly dependent on whether they get proper and regular maintenance. Heat pumps can often last fourteen or fifteen years when cared for properly, which is one of the higher ranges for heating and cooling systems.

Heating and cooling combined

Keeping your home warm in the winter is one thing, but what about keeping it cool in the summer? Usually, this means you either need an HVAC system or to have both a heater and an AC. However, with a heat pump, you have an alternative option for heating and cooling your home with only a single unit.

Uses a common fuel; no need to stockpile

Electricity is a common fuel source, but many heating and cooling systems use physical fuels like oil or propane. While some of these have dedicated lines, you’ll often still need to stockpile fuel for emergencies. Meanwhile, heat pumps use electricity, which is available for every homeowner and doesn’t require stockpiling. In a worst-case scenario, you can fuel your heat pump with a generator.

Very energy efficient

Compared to other heating and cooling options, heat pumps are very energy efficient. The electricity they run on is a cleaner fuel than other options such as oil or gas. They’re also very efficient at using the electricity itself. If you want to maximize your heat pump’s efficiency, they work best when there’s little difference between the source and supply temperatures. This means they work best in moderate climates.

Low carbon emissions

Heat pumps are an environmentally-friendly alternative to most other heating and cooling systems. Using one for your home can be a great way to reduce your carbon footprint. For instance, you can reduce your energy usage by 30-60% by using a water source heat pump. This sort of heat pump transfers heat to/from a source of water to regulate your home’s temperature.

6 Reasons to Call for Boiler Maintenance in Pennsylvania

6 Reasons to Call for Boiler Maintenance in Pennsylvania

  • Heating
boiler maintenance in Pennsylvania by McHale's

We only have one month until winter begins, and we’ve covered most of the important work you need to do. Last month we helped you shut down your AC and its condenser, and then we advised you on getting a furnace tune-up. However, some homeowners use a boiler to heat their homes. If that’s the case, we suggest calling us to schedule boiler maintenance for your Pennsylvania home. It’s even more important to keep your boiler healthy than with furnaces because boilers can explode if they fail. There are plenty of other reasons to have us keep your boiler in good shape.

Here are six reasons you should call McHale’s to help you with boiler maintenance for your Pennsylvania home:

Extend your boiler’s life

Boilers can be an expensive investment, so it’s a good idea to keep yours healthy. Regular maintenance work can extend your boiler’s lifespan and help you get the most out of your purchase. Keep your boiler well-maintained, and it can run for up to ten to fifteen years.

Follow local boiler laws

Boilers are one of the more dangerous things you can buy for your home. That’s why there are often local laws that require boiler-owners to get regular maintenance and inspections, usually once or twice a year. Failing to follow these laws will result in fines, not to mention your boiler will be in bad condition. Laws like these are meant to encourage safety, so be sure to get your regular maintenance scheduled from experts like the ones at McHale’s.

Keep your warranty valid

Boiler manufacturers often have a stipulation in their product’s warranties requiring their owners to give them regular service. If you don’t follow the stipulations, the warranty will become void, denying you any payment in the event of a breakdown.

Lower energy costs

Boilers are one of the more power-hungry heating systems you can buy. On an annual basis, only HVAC systems use more energy. However, regular boiler maintenance can cause it to use less energy and save you around 10% on your energy bills.

Boost its energy efficiency and reliability

Boilers are complex machines, and some of their parts can wear down quickly. When you call us for boiler maintenance, we can change out any parts that are getting ineffective. This will save you money in the long run by letting your boiler do more with less energy. Also, a healthy boiler is less likely to break down, saving you from paying for repairs.

Protect yourself and your family

A running boiler is great for heating your home, but it makes carbon monoxide as a side effect. That’s why boilers have an exhaust pipe to safely vent the deadly and odorless gas outside. However, damaged boilers may get leaky exhaust pipes that will let carbon monoxide into your home. Also, in extreme cases, faulty, run-down boilers can explode. This makes giving them proper care a high priority.

5 Benefits of Getting a Furnace Tune-Up

5 Benefits of Getting a Furnace Tune-Up

  • Heating
furnace tune-up in Pennsylvania by McHale's

Now that your AC will be safe from the winter weather, you should focus on preparing your furnace. You’ve likely had it inactive for the past several months, and it’s likely gotten dusty and worn down during that time. If you want to ensure your Pennsylvania home will have heat this winter, you’ll want to call us to perform a furnace tune-up. By fixing it up, we can help stop any problems your furnace may have developed over the summer.

Here are five ways that getting a furnace tune-up for your Pennsylvania home can help you:

Save money, stop breakdowns

A furnace tune-up might not be something you want to pay for, but it’s less costly than replacing or repairing your furnace. Furnace tune-ups allow us to find and prevent problems that could damage or break your furnace. By getting a tune-up, you’ll save money in the long run and avoid losing your heat during the winter.

Prevent dangerous gas leaks

Gas furnace owners should be especially aware of their furnace’s health. If they get damaged or worn down, they can leak carbon monoxide or flammable gasses. Carbon monoxide is deadly to people and most animals, while flammable gasses can start a house fire.

Know your furnace’s health and age

How old is your furnace and how healthy is it? If you don’t know, calling for a tune-up can help you learn. When we work on your furnace, we can help you figure out if you’ll need a replacement. You should schedule your tune-up as soon as possible to get more time to look at models that might be good replacements.

Prolong your furnace’s lifespan

It’s never good to neglect your furnace and tune-ups are key to keeping it running its best. If you don’t get yours regularly checked out, it’ll die out faster and cost you more as it uses more energy to run. Also, neglected furnaces are more prone to breaking down and needing other repairs.

Higher energy efficiency

Furnace owners, according to the Department of Energy, have about half of their energy consumption come from using the furnace. However, regular tune-ups can lower this percentage by replacing old parts and correcting other issues. Best-case scenario, your furnace can use 30% less energy.

Why get McHale’s to fix up my furnace?

How to Shut Down Your AC For the Cold Weather

How to Shut Down Your AC For the Cold Weather

  • Air Conditioning
ac shutdown in Pennsylvania by McHale's

Fall is here and the weather is cooling down. That means winter is coming, and homeowners have to think about switching out their cooling for heating. Like most homeowners, you probably have an AC, which includes the inside unit and the outdoor condenser. To ensure the outdoor unit will be safe, you have to shut down your AC to disconnect it from power and protect it from the elements. At McHale’s, we can advise you on how to properly protect your AC from the winter.

Here’s what you have to do to shut down your AC:

Repair any pre-existing damage

Before you prepare your AC for the winter, you should make sure there isn’t any damage that needs repairing. If there is any damage, call us so you can get it fixed up. Allowing a damaged AC to linger through the winter will only cause the damage to get worse, and you might be surprised to have your AC not work next spring.

Turn off the condenser

You might think you just have to turn off the indoor AC unit, but the condenser needs to be shut off, as well. If you don’t, a warm spell could cause the condenser to turn on and suck in ice and snow. To turn off the condenser’s power, look for the breaker switch for the AC and turn it off. It’s often found on the side of the house or under a flip-up switch near the condenser. Keep in mind that you’ll have to turn this switch back on in the spring.

Clean the condenser

With the power sorted, now you should spend a moment giving the condenser some TLC. Find a broom and sweep away any sort of debris around and on your condenser, such as loose branches and leaves. After that, you should lightly wash off the condenser with a hose. While it’s drying, check to see if the filter needs replacing and examine the condenser to ensure the seals are tight and there’s no visible damage. If you do see any sort of damage, let us know the next time you need our service.

Cover up the condenser

When the condenser is dried off, all that remains is to cover the condenser with a water-proof cover. If you don’t own one, you can usually find one at the hardware store or you can use a water-proof tarp if it covers the entire condenser. Also, make sure you use bungee ropes to secure the cover so it won’t be blown away by the wind.

5 Ways to Improve Your Garbage Disposal Maintenance

5 Ways to Improve Your Garbage Disposal Maintenance

  • Plumbing
garbage disposal maintenance in Pennsylvania by McHale's

Owning a garbage disposal can help you keep your kitchen looking and smelling clean. They’re also a good way to live a green lifestyle, as they can help reduce the garbage you produce. However, owning a garbage disposal means having to keep it maintained to keep it from breaking down and making your kitchen smell bad. Fortunately, we can provide some tips to help you get the most out of your garbage disposal maintenance.

Here are five ways you can improve your garbage disposal maintenance:

Clean the inside

The inside of your garbage disposal is a major part of its health. Give it regular cleaning by pouring a mix of baking soda and vinegar down the drain to keep the pipes clean. Dish soap and cold water can also work if you have the garbage disposal running and keep running the water for a minute.

Frequently use it with cold water

Using the garbage disposal often can help keep it from getting rusty, ensure all the parts are working right, and clear potential obstructions. Also, whenever you use the garbage disposal, run the cold water as well. The cold water helps solidify any oils and grease that could otherwise clog your drain.

Chop up bigger garbage yourself

As sharp as the garbage disposal’s blades are, they have trouble cutting up bigger pieces of trash. That’s why you should cut them up yourself before putting them down the disposal. Doing this can help prevent potential clogs. Also, put bigger bits of garbage down the disposal one at a time to ensure the system can handle it.

Only dispose of biodegradable food

The garbage disposal is made to easily handle only a specific type of garbage. Biodegradable food, like meat and carrots, are is what it was made to cut. Be warned that certain biodegradable foods are still bad for the garbage disposal. Some of them include:

  • Celery and other fibrous foods
  • Excess grease and oils
  • Potato peels and other starchy foods
  • Coffee grounds and other foods that make lots of sediment
  • Pasta and rice
  • Fruit pits
  • Bones and other solid trash

Keep your hand out

Even when the garbage disposal has a clog in it, you shouldn’t try to dislodge it with your hand. If you get the clog out, the sudden release of tension can make the blades spin and cut you. Use something like a pair of tongs, instead. If the clog is stubborn and won’t dislodge, you can always call the experts at McHale’s.

6 Reasons to Get a Standby Generator Installation

6 Reasons to Get a Standby Generator Installation

  • Electrical
  • Generator
standby generator installation in Pennsylvania by McHale's

Here on the East Coast, we’re the part of America most susceptible to hurricanes. Up here in Pennsylvania, we don’t get as much trouble from hurricanes. However, we can still get hit harder than in the New England area. Because of this, it might be a good idea to call McHale’s and ask about getting a standby generator installation for your home. Having a generator on your property allows you to keep the power on, even during the harshest of storms.

Here are six reasons to call us for a standby generator installation:

Increased home value

Installing a generator on your lot gives you peace of mind. However, this also applies to anyone else who decides to live at your home. It’s hard to put a price on safety, but having a standby generator on your lot will still improve your property’s value.

Seamless switching

When everything is okay, your standby generator will sit on your property and do nothing. However, when the main power grid goes down, an automatic transfer switch in the generator activates. It cuts you from the main grid, switches your power to the generator, and turns on the generator. This happens in a very short amount of time, so you’ll only lose power for a moment.

Safety during emergencies

Having power at your home means you don’t need to leave for any power-related issues. In hotter or colder months, losing your power means you won’t have cooling or heating. When this happens, you might have to go to a hotel so you can live at a reasonable temperature. As well as being inconvenient, you’ll also have to pay money for your stay. Having power means you and your family can stay safe at home.

Protection from electrical damage

Even when your home has no electricity, but your electronics can still get damaged. While you’re connected to the grid during an outage, there’s the possibility of violent power surges, spikes, and brownouts. All of these can damage your electronics while you’re connected to the grid. If you have a standby generator during an outage, it’ll keep you off the grid and safe from electrical dangers. It’ll only switch you back to the grid when it has power and has stabilized.

Constant electrical power

As you might have guessed, generators let you keep your power during a blackout. Having constant electricity gives you a wide variety of benefits. Among them, you’ll no longer have to worry about your food going bad because the power went out. This can also be very useful if you have medical equipment at your home that needs constant power.

Protection from other damage

There’s more than electrical damage you have to worry about when the power goes out. When you have no electricity, your sump pump can’t function. That means your home is vulnerable to flooding during a rainstorm. Similarly, losing out on your electric heat during the winter can cause your pipes to freeze. If you have a standby generator, all of these systems will stay functioning.

What makes McHale’s the best option for buying a generator?

5 Signs Your Home Needs Repiping

5 Signs Your Home Needs Repiping

  • Plumbing
repiping in Pennsylvania by McHale's

Even though your plumbing pipes aren’t exposed to the elements, they can still get worn down over time. As pipes get older and worn down, they become prone to rust, corrosion, and general disrepair. A failure in any part of your home’s plumbing can result in major water damage. Before disaster strikes, you’ll want to know when it’s time to replace your pipes. Let us show you some signs that you should call McHale’s to help you with a repiping in Pennsylvania.

Here are 5 things that should have you considering  repiping in your Pennsylvania home:

Pipe material lifetimes

Depending on the material of your pipes, some of them may wear out quicker than others. Galvanized metal pipes, for instance, last 20 to 50 years and are primarily from the 1930s to ’80s. They’re a definite candidate for replacement. More modern materials like copper and PVC can last a lot longer. However, keep in mind that the pipe joints and fixtures can also become worn down, as well. If the pipes are acting up despite being relatively new, you can ask us about doing preventative maintenance.

Outdated piping

This sign is similar to the one before it. Some types of piping you home can have might be considered outdated. Galvanized metal is a pretty good example. These heavy pipes tend to corrode and rust internally, causing discolored water. Also, polybutylene piping tends to break down frequently, costing you a lot in repeated repairs. Getting your piping replaced can fix these problems.

Lead piping

Speaking of outdated piping materials, lead is the one that should result in an immediate call for a plumber. These pipes are grey and softer than other pipes. You can see this for yourself if you scratch it with a screwdriver. Lead is infamous for being highly toxic and can cause a wide variety of serious health issues if consumed. If you find that your house has lead piping, call us as soon as possible so we can get safer pipes for your home.

Low water pressure

If your showers aren’t as strong as they are normally, there’s likely a problem in the pipes. The problem could simply be a clog, but it might also be caused by leaks and pinholes in the pipes. Leaky pipes can cause other problems, such as water damage and mold growth. If drain cleaner isn’t helping your pressure problem, you might need the help of one of our plumbers.

Colorful water

Is your water brown, yellow, or full of sediment? That could be a sign of rust and corrosion in your pipes that needs to be dealt with quickly. Aside from the usual problems, rust wears away at your pipes over time, making them prone to leaking or collapsing. It’s possible the bad water is only your hot water system. However, if all of your water is rusty, a piping replacement might be your best option.
